Nature Guide beating down a path on a hike in Mudumalai National Forest [July 2011]
When i was watching the nature guide opening up a less trodden, sometimes new path, using his parang [long knife], i was reminded of the role of a pioneer. A role i identify with.
He walks in front of everyone. He requires us to observe certain protocols for our own safety and for higher chance of success to view the creatures of the wild.
He listens, he looks at for cues left behind by the animals, he uses his nose to detect scent, he is fully concentrated to create success for the people under his charge. He takes his role very seriously.
He has to necessarily travel light to allow adept mobility. He therefore will get scratches and meet many occupational hazards unknown to others.
In the end, he has indeed created a path for another nature guide / forest ranger to tread on. That does not bother him.
A true pioneer is happy to open new paths.
