Those who have watched the animation Rio, the blue bird –‘Blu’ - from South America, could not fly because he never knew he could. So believing that he could not fly, he had a hard time changing.
There were encouraging friends, there were coaches, there were many opportunities, and loads of external motivation. None was successful in getting him to fly.
He only had the breakthrough when there was a crisis. The female blue bird – ‘Jewel’ - was diving downwards toward death and he got desperate. At that point he flapped his wings and he became airborne!
So often in life we can only see transformation change when we are faced with a crisis. Yet many people avoid crisis or any form of discomfort and end up going around the mountain so many times, unable to break free from the ‘cannot’ mindset.
Success escapes those who avoid crisis. The future belongs to those know hardship and have faced disasters, not to those who have led indulgent lifestyles and cannot handle failure.
Thankfully toddlers never give up when they start to walk despite the number of times they fall. I Wonder what happened to the ‘can do’ spirit which all of us had at 14 months – that we somehow we lost in the passage to adulthood.
