We, humans, are made to be creative, seekers of knowledge, guardians of the earth and leaders of God’s creation pack. We may deny our inheritance / responsibility but the [spiritual] DNA has already been embedded within us when we were in our mother’s womb. That 'DNA' is like our 'umbilical cord' to our Creator. The search for significance, meaning of life, acceptance, etc all point to our natural instinct to fill the void within us, until we find God.
We are created to have a deep relationship with our Spiritual Creator and when we deny Him, God, our insides just crave for substitutes – knowledge, substance dependencies, relationship addictions, glory in achievements, or simply having a long distance run that won’t end.
Knowledge, and especially knowledge in spiritual / religious arena, is one of the major distractions for those who are well schooled. Even the most pious and devout scholar faces the subtle distraction.
The level of my knowledge of God, of the prophetic events of the world, of theologians’ interpretation, of how the pieces come together may be very high on the measure-o-meter. That does not mean the depth of my relationship with God, my ‘surrenderedness, to the Almighty, my total allegiance to my God, and my total faith in my maker will accordingly be high on the measure-o-meter.
In fact, because it is a form of subtle distraction and substitution, often the most knowledgeable is also the least in touch with God [of course there are exceptions].
I like the 12 men who walked with Jesus – fishermen, tax collector, and only one amongst them was a young doctor-to-be. Totally the opposite of the Pharisees of their time; simple men who were more skilled with their hands and matters of the heart than knowledge of the Torah, and world events of their times.
We who crave for more abilities and knowledge must remember the responsibilities that come with that. We must constantly let God convict us of any impure motives, distractions, and seduction of pride.
