Watching a bunch of men doing very different tasks at a nearby construction project from the windows of my apartment...I wondered what each person might say when asked what is his purpose or function in the project.
This question is important to any organisation and management literature discusses it too.
Each person and team must do their job, according to their functional responsibilities. For example, the men laying the concrete on the steel structure, which is to be the floor of the 1st storey of the condominium - they must diligently do their job and with competence. However, if their focus of 'doing their job well' or their reference of an 'outcome' is centred around the cement, the project / organisation is unlikely to accomplish a common vision or a successful outcome. You might ask why.
For a construction project to be successful, which involves many subcontractors [cranes operators, cement team, labourers, various specialists], all component talents must have a common vision. The common vision, across all functional groups, including the security guard, must be to give the occupant / owner of the apt a defect free / safe / functional environment to live in. No less!
Only when the person pouring and spreading the concrete understands and strives to ensure safety, defect free [eg. leak-free] and functional environment for the eventual owner, and same for the odd job labourers, specialists, the crane operators and etc, then a common vision becomes powerful in ensuring success.
SILOS does the exact opposite. Too many organisations have silos: depts / functions working independently, myopically and uncooperatively.
So, I wonder what the men are thinking.
