Teams which produce great outcomes that are relevant to staff as well as senior management of an organisation, are made up of people who are less focused on self [self protection, self promotion, self reliance, self benefits].
To realise impactful and lasting results on the ground, organisations need people who achieves outcomes, regardless of obscurity – ie visibility is not a priority.
Talents who do not need to be padded on the back all the time, who do not need constant positive feedback, who are ok with mundane work, unnoticed by any, and who are confident of value contribution without being manipulative they are there in our midst and often are unnoticed.
Why the conclusion?
I recently witnessed a team of results-oriented talents, working together – 3 tier. It was interesting to watch their interactions. To be fair, they all wanted success. However, quite noticeably their motivation for the success is driven largely by their self gain and the visibility ticket to greater pastures.
I suppose the results of the project will still be good. But in the learning field, the learning of the target population and the organisational learning / knowledge should remain as the key focus.
Perhaps when the learning outcomes consistently deliver value and impact, the visibility will come anyway [the tortoise way].
The hare did not win the race.
