The state of our ‘today’ is the result of the thought life of our ‘yesterday’, just as today’s thought life will decide the state of our ‘tomorrow’. [by Joyce Meyer, paraphrased].
So many of us think that if only the current circumstances [job, finance, house, spouse, boss, etc] change, we will be happier. In reality, I am stuck with me. Wherever I go, whatever the circumstances, whether I am 2 years old or 98 years old, I cannot be separated from me.
So, it is more important that I cultivate enduring principles that will stay with me for life, regardless of the circumstances. These principles should help me live a ‘in spite of’ life. In spite of bad economy, I live a meaningful life; in spite of unfavourable circumstances, I choose to have a winning mindset; in spite of people treating me unkindly, I remain unchanged in my manners, and increase lovingkindness.
I want to spend 2009 practising a life of ‘in spite of’. The circumstances are there to help me cultivate a winning attitude and I would rather they don't stay favourable all the time.
